Folate, B9, or folic acid, is another of the essential water soluble group of B vitamins. It is needed for cell division to make new healthy cells as well as being key for making DNA and other genetic material in the body.

Folate plays a critical role during pregnancy and prevents neural tube defects like spina bifida in the baby.

More study is needed, nut there is some evidence to suggest that folate may provide benefits such as:

• reducing the risk of Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC)
• reducing certain cancer risks, particularly colorectal cancer
• lowering homocysteine levels in the body, which in turn reduces the risks of heart attack, stroke and dementia
• may lower the risk of depression and help some antidepressants to be more effective
